The compact sash line from Stürtz Machinery Inc. can produce up to 900 welded and cleaned sash per shift with one operator in less than 1,200 square feet of space, the supplier reports. The line consists of two horizontal four-point sash welders—each automatically unloaded via a single tier belt system. Welded sash are transferred onto a twin tier buffer and transport table, which separates the squares and feeds them into an infeed belt buffer. The buffer conveyor then feeds each square into an automated four-head pass through sash corner cleaner. The programmable, CNC machine cleans all four corners of the sash at the same time. Compact tooling arrangements allow for four-head cleaning on sash as small as 12 inches by 12 inches. The welders can be mounted on a common base and conveying systems are kept to a minimum length, which still allows for adequate buffering through the line.
The SMI-CNC-2K-30-F twin-head frame corner cleaner has two programmable, CNC-controlled cleaning heads. The standard cleaner incorporates two programmable axes per head with a four-axes-per-head option available. It will clean two corners per cycle on sizes from 16 inches up to 117 inches wide. Smaller squares can be cleaned one corner at a time. The cleaner will handle profiles up to 7 inches tall with no modifications to the standard design. It is available with integral tilt latch routing and pivot bar drilling for sash applications. Linear and circular interpolation to allow cleaning of curved patterns and profile recognition of up to 30 different profiles are standard features. Expanded memory to enhance profile recognition capabilities is available. Each head houses nine cleaning tools. A full-width scrap conveyor belt is standard. The belt is located at floor level to bring chips and vinyl dust out of the machine where it can be cleaned up quickly and easily without interrupting the machine cycle.

The cleaner is designed for precision operation and years of dependable service. Several optional fabrication operations are available, including tilt latch routing and pivot bar insertion drilling, which can be added while keeping cycle time to less than 40 seconds per sash. Additional options include night latch routing in one or both stiles, pivot bar screw hole locations, weep slots, lock locations and keeper locations.
